Five checks before you buy
- Compare the total, not the monthly price. A longer plan makes the monthly figure look smaller even when you pay more upfront.
- Count bonus months. "2 years + 3 months free" is a 27-month plan. Divide the total by all the months you get.
- Check what it renews at. Black Friday discounts almost always apply to the first term only.
- Make sure the money-back guarantee still applies. Some providers exclude certain promotions from their refund policy; ExpressVPN, for example, notes that some promotional offers are excluded.
- Be wary of "ends tonight." Some of these prices appear most of the year. Our deals page notes how often each price shows up.
